Blood Glucose – Know your numbers

Lab test and examination helps you and your healthcare provider knows how well your current diabetes treatment is working.

Check-up/Lab Test What this tells you “Target” or goal
A1 c (Hemoglobin A1c) An average of your blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Less than 7 %
LDL cholesterol The amount of “bad” cholesterol –the type that can lead to clogged arteries. Less than 100 mg/dL
Blood Pressure The pressure against the walls of your blood vessels. Less than 130/ 80
Microalbumin  A urine test looking for the tiny amount of protein that may spill from kidneys –an early warning sign of kidney damage. Less than 30
Eye and foot check A dilated eye exam checks for any damage in the small blood vessels of the eyes. Foot exams look for blood vessel, muscle, and nerve damage. Also, inspect your feet each day and report problems to your doctor. “Negative” or normal
